US black metal roars once again as October the 20th sees Will and Sam Skarstad return under the banner of their most well known project, Yellow Eyes. This time it’s with a new album, the strangely titled “Immersion Trench Reverie” and in anticipation of this event a preview track, “Velvet on the Horns” is now available at their bandcamp. Drums are once again handled by the fantastic Michael Rekevics of Vanum, Vorde and the much much missed (in the Black Antlers house) Fell Voices.
Well, at the risk of sounding glib Yellow Eyes go some way towards filling my Fell Voices void. Not because the two bands particularly resemble each other sonically, although Michael’s skinsmanship is some of the most distinctive in the whole USBM scene. Rather both bands always sound as if they’re barely in control of the noise they create, but this lends such a thrilling sense of urgency. The preview song is largely mid paced however it contains two fantastic 40 second bursts of Rekevicsian energy at the 1:40 and 4:04 marks respectively; in between this snakes the slightly off-kilter, melancholy guitars of the Skarstad brothers, creating a kind of O horizon over which Will’s desperate, banshee wail soars. Black metal is often associated with winter however I always get distinctively autumnal hues from Yellow Eyes so it’s the perfect time for this record to be released.
CD and vinyl versions will be handled by Gilead Media
