Earlier this month, the Zurich, Switzerland drone musician, Debutante released a split with fellow noise-maker, Feral. Debutante describes the music on the split as “Songs about hating your body and dysphoria”. Today, we are sharing Debutante’s contribution and closing track “No Mirrors”. The track is a slow burning drone that opens with ethereal acoustic guitar that recalls Giles Corey. The track builds from there adding more ambience, sporadic blasts of noise, and electronic flourishes that eventually cultivate into the tracks heavy dirge of a closing stretch.

Lyrically, Debutante makes good on the split’s description. With moaned and damaged vocals, Debutante paints and incredibly honest portrayal of androgyny. Throughout the track, Debutante wails key lyrics like: “I want to look more feminine, but my hairline’s receding” and “I want to put on makeup without feeling so damn vulnerable”. Listen to the track below and stream the whole split via bandcamp.

Ok this is legit weirdness. And in a good way.

And it only gets stranger as it goes on. In a good way.

Starts off sounding a bit Coil, the vocals remind me of John Balance, and ends up sounding a bit Ben Frost.

For sure. There’s a lot of spot the experimental influence going on but it all comes together in a pretty unique way.

I have no idea who those people are but I will definitely check them out based on your mention and the strength of this track. Holy shit this is great.

I really recommend Ben Frost’s album By The Throat – it’s kinda like contemporary classical music influenced by drone and metal. You can find him on bandcamp. As for Coil, they did soooooo many records and were half genius, half gibberish (although their gibberish was sometimes genius too). If you’re interested you’ll find them on You Tube (no bandcamp as both John Balance and Peter Christopherson who were Coil are now dead). Give the Ape of Naples a listen, it’s their last album but also one of their best and the second song on it, Amethyst Deceivers is the one that this reminds me of. By the way my handle Black Antlers is after one of their albums too.

Damn. Not sure how this slipped by without even a passing familiarity! Thanks dude. Just more music to dig. Quite the story with these guys.
