Most Blocland staffers are veterans of da’Gum. We’ve all experienced the horror of a full on comment shitstorm, the desperate retreat across no-mans land in the wake of an ill timed pun, the duck ‘n’ cover from a Solo or Cheap Suit napalming. We’ve all woken in the midst of the night shivering at the things we’ve read and questioning the things we’ve written. We’ve all stared into that heart of darkness, forced to confront the truth of our own comments and said “Dear God, is this all I am?” I think this entitles us to take a certain pride in ourselves at Blocland, our integrity was hard fought and hard won. We may talk a lot of shit (we do), but it’s our shit, not secondhand TMZ shit or P4K shit, or Gum shit. We don’t need to signal boost every clueless twitter rant, circle jerk or celebrity bowel movement. And we don’t need to signal boost James Fucking Murphy.

Now I don’t really care if JFM is a bit of a dick, his musical obsessiveness boarders on the OCD so I wouldn’t be surprised if he is, however I do care about the cumulative negative effect that every one of his twatterings is having on my relationship to LCD. I liked LCD, in may ways I still do. ‘All My Friends’, ‘On Repeat’ and ‘I Can Change’ still sit very highly in my estimation, however suffering the likes of da’Gum reporting on JFM’s every piece of butt dribble makes this more precarious with each passing day. For the love of god just shut up!

Whilst on a recent recon mission over at da’Gum, one of the senior Bloclanders, posted how they wished that LCD had just dropped their new record, unannounced. Would that they had! We’d all be feeling a lot more charitable, maybe even a little excited. Damnit! We probably would have collectively shat ourselves. Now, I just don’t want to hear anymore of this terminally fumbled, ‘over exposed’ album roll out. And I barely care about the music that’s going to be on it…..surely that was originally the point.

(Ditto WoD and Arcade Fire album roll outs (although I’ve never cared about the later so couldn’t give a fuck what they do but I appreciate others may), and ditto Gum’s insistence on posting every dipshit celebrity political endorsement).

Disclaimer: All Murphys pictured in this article are in no way affiliated to JFM, LCD, Gum or Blocland, please respect that there are others who live with this name. One of them is a fucking good guitarist.

James Murphy seems like a guy who has spent far too much time obsessing over Bowie, David Byrne, and really every other storied musician. This whole rollout is more like Murphy working on building his myth rather than just releasing a damn album. He’s thinking about the LCD Soundsystem books and documentaries. And surprise releasing an album isn’t gonna give him as many opportunities to ego stroke and talk shit with Zayne Lowe or the New York Times. That being said, I really like Call the Police, American Dream is alright, and I don’t really like Tonight. I hope the album is good but it isn’t really a top musical priority for me and I love LCD Soundsystem.

And to think how stoked I was when I first heard they were reforming. But this seems to be a real thing of late, soooooo many bands are fucking up their roll outs really badly. I do think that commercial music sites often have a negative part to play as they cover every piece of non-news to generate clicks, and labels / artists respond with more non-news and we become fatigued by it all. I’ve completely avoided LCDs new tracks so at least I can come to the album reasonably afresh. This is having the same effect on me that an over-hyped band does whereby I refuse to listen to them…even if they’re really good. Rather I need to approach them on my own terms, often about 6 months after the hype has gone.

Forgot to mention it in my comment, but this post is gold. Nailed it with the “butt dribble” comment.

Thanks, at first I wasn’t sure if I was going too far but then I thought WTF call it as you see it.

Yeah I can’t really fault Murphy for the click bait headlines. When you do as many interviews as he’s been doing, you’re going to be misquoted or say some dumb shit. But he could also maybe not do so many interviews. Reaching peak [insert really anyone in the public eye] has become far too common of an occurrence.

I’ve never liked LCD or JFM (with the exception of one song, one song only) so … yeah, that’s where I’m coming from. But the “breaking up” and “farewell tour” always screamed bullshit to me. Lobster nails it on the head, he’s building a myth. This new album doesn’t even have to be that good (and based on the singles it’s not even close IMO), because he’ll get all the spoils of a comeback album when it’s just another normal-ass album.

      Amen

I also only like literally one LCD song! Mine’s New York, I Love You… What’s yours?

I think too much publicity on any album becomes grating

  • Blochead4real

This is the last time I will ever comment on this site. ever

    • Black Antlers

      Was it something I/we said?
