A couple months back we published our best of the first half of 2017 list, http://blocland.com/music/best-albums-2017, and Copenhagen duo First Hate led that list off at #20. Several of the Blocland staff adore that album and today it dawned on me other than the aforementioned album ranking we haven’t posted anything FROM the album. Let’s right that wrong here today. Joakim Nørgaard & Anton Falck comprise First Hate and are just two more folks from the Copenhagen scene that appears to have an endless well of talent. This track, “The One”, is pretty typical of what you are getting into with these guys. So much of this album has that snakey drum beat backing very melodic vocal lines. Think European Tanlines for a possible comparison. August is a bitch….First Hate and their album “A Prayer For The Unemployed” is the summer album that’ll keep your head boppin’. This one is a mortal lock for my personal top 10 2017 AOTY. Hope you enjoy.

    Great song, incredible band name.

I can’t recommend the album enough. It’s really great. It’s funny cuz in my mind THIS is pop music. And I think it’s crossover-y. But I’ve learned that I have no idea what possible crossover music sounds like. Cuz I thought EVERY song on the last Grimes album should be on pop radio stations. I have been assured by people that love horrible pop that I am very wrong.

Oh don’t worry, I’ve been listening to it plenty! So frustrating … when I tell people I’m a fan of “pop music,” they assume I’m into Tay-Tay and Chainsmokers and “The Truth” and all that garbage. But pop is a HUUUUGE genre. And same here, baffles me that some of the pop artists I adore can’t crossover. Why am I not hearing this track, anything from the new Dua Lipa, CRJ, Grimes, Holy Ghost, etc. on the radio or at the club?! Or anything from the new Lorde album? Basically, nothing makes sense.

I know this is kinda obvious but I realized it’s predictability that is the absolute key. My GF is awesome cuz she listens to the cool stuff snobs like us like but she also listens to top 40 radio. And she knows ALL THOSE SONGS. And what that music has that snob music doesn’t is completely reliable repetition. They NEVER throw the listener a curveball. They hit those hooks like laser guided Tomahawks. And they certainly don’t inexplicably throw a harmonica in there the way First Hate does.

          • Cooolin

You’re right about all that. Also, the lyrics are predictable AF … I feel like you can sing along to a top-40 track the first time you’re letting it slide smoothly into your ear holes. And no, that’s not always a bad thing! Music doesn’t always have to be challenging, ya scuddy snobs. Sometimes I throw on 95.7 The Party and have a damn good time.

This entire ruse hits paydirt. Hey everybody!!! Coooolin isn’t even one of us. Run along and listen to Puth, ya traitor
