We here at Blocland are incredibly proud to bestow on you and the world our exclusive stream of the new Mastodon track “Sultan’s Curse” off of the band’s upcoming album Emperor of Sand. Just to clarify, by exclusive we mean exclusive to anyone with access to youtube or any streaming service. Not everyone has Internet, alright?

But you, dear reader, should count your blessings since you obviously have a reliable Internet connection because this song is a monster. You can thank Al Gore. What we have here is Mastodon striking a nice balance between the sludge of Blood Mountain and the hard rock leanings of The Hunter and Once More Round the Sun. Let me tell you, I’m intrigued to see what comes from here.

Good review but not feeling it. But I’m the kind of guy that wants his metallers raping baby goats with no apologies.

I’m not a fucking vegan after all.

I feel ya. This is more metal than I was expecting it to be. I don’t really know what the story for this album is something about a Mad Max type desert dystopia situation but I guess a lot of their family members have been diagnosed with cancer so it’s about that. I like the song quite a bit but honestly that info has me more intrigued.

I would characterize Blood Mountain as sludge so much as balls-to-the-walls-mythical-concept-prog-metal-masterpiece.

Well I guess we know who’s taking on Mastodon coverage around here.

      • theyachtmaster

Okay, finally listened: this is the Mastodon I’ve been missing since Blood Mountain.

Yeah I think it’s great. I haven’t been that crazy about anything they’ve done since Blood Mountain so this was a surprise. I really love that all three of them are taking on vocals here.
