After five years of silence, the classic Boston hardcore unit, Converge, have returned with two new tracks. No surprise, but the two new tracks showcase a veteran band that has not lost an ounce of vitality in their absence. The first song, “I Can Tell You About Pain”, is exactly what you want from Converge. The band furiously blasts through its two minute runtime. Kurt Ballou’s production pops and Jacob Bannon sounds as ragged as ever. It’s very much a testament to Converge’s consistency. But, the stunner here is the seven minute “Eve”. Despite “Wretched World” or Jane Doe’s eleven minute title track, Converge aren’t really known for sweeping epics. Though, I’d argue it’s something they do just as well as short game hardcore assaults. The track’s foundation is built around a tribal drum beat and gradually ascends from there bringing to mind classic period Neurosis and Cobalt’s Slow Forever. Give them a listen below.

First, I appreciate the play by play. Second, what is Converge if not hardcore for lulling you to a deep rest?

  • Cooolin

    First track is a juggernaut.
But Eve … man, that is some captivating shit. They pack a lot into those seven minutes.

    • lobster man

I honestly think Eve could turn out to be one of their best. I’m gonna thank Cobalt for that one. Wasn’t expecting anything like it.

  • Black Antlers

Heh, not sure if I’m welcome here after my comments on the other site *looks over shoulder in case of flying glass*. This is Jane Doe Converge = awesome, rather than No Heroes Converge = : (

    • lobster man

Controversial opinions are always accepted in the fold. Gotta mix it up. As long as we can agree that this and Jane doe are awesome. No Heroes is their worst though…

      • Black Antlers

Yep, we agree. Following my post I gave Eve a listen….and then another….and then another….it just kept begging me to hit play again each time it finished. Awesome stuff!! Speaking of controversy there’s a hilariously negative review of Tchornobog over at Angry Metal Guy. I mean opinions and shit but still. I often find AMG give high marks to a lot of stuff I don’t care for, they seem to love the Fleshgod Apocalypses and Dodecahedrons of this world…if it makes their album of the month chances are it’ll bore me stupid.

Typically I only agree with them when they like stuff I liked prior to reading the review. Like the new Boris. But even that’s pretty rare. They’ve never turned me on to anything. The stuff they really love over there is usually… well… super cheesy.

Am I the only one that hears Nightbringer-ish upper register spiky black metal in “Eve”, but with more distortion and angsty vox? It doesn’t matter but had that thought.

    • lobster man

You might be. But I’ll listen for that.

    • Black Antlers

That’s a really interesting take on it, will play em back to back.
