The Phoenix, Arizona planet pounders Spirit Adrift will be returning next month with their sophomore album, Curse of Conception. We’ve already heard the album’s prog-ed out title track and now the band is sharing the equally essential second single, “Starless Age (Enshrined). In my write-up about “Curse of Conception”, I explained that Spirit Adrift’s sound is hard to pin down. I mean, it’s heavy metal, but we can do far better than that. My best description was basically some kind of mix between doom and NWOBHM. All of that is true, but not necessarily true for “Starless Age (Enshrined)”. This new track feels much more in the vein of pre Master of Puppets Metallica. The way it starts as a slow burner built around endlessly satisfying riffs and then bursts into a floor punching gallop. It would be right at home on Ride the Lightening. That’s what everyone’s been saying about it, but it’s fine. That’s pretty much the highest praise you can give to anyone playing this strand of metal. I honestly couldn’t tell you which one I prefer. And if this hasn’t been enough to convince you of Spirit Adrift’s greatness, the album is full of this kind of Earth-shaking genre agnosticism.
