Oh hi. Thanks for stopping by. This week has seen a massive firestorm on the various Blocland chat sites. One of the more virtuous writers for the site opined that The Hives album Veni Vidi Vicious is the superior album to The Strokes Is This It? Which was immediately met with much laughter, mockery, and general disapproval. But as the lit Bic lighter blew out into a full conflagration some dared to agree. Over the course of several days it became hard to tell what the general consensus on this seemingly silly opinion the staff fell on. I mean it’s gotta be Is This It?, right? It’s considered a seminal album by damn near all the wagging tongues. And The Hives are seen as kind of a jokey band with a handful of good songs. Comparing the two is a fools errand, at best.

But hold on there, youngster. The two albums have some very basic comparisons. One from 2000 the other from 2001. Both albums are 5 piece bands with standard rock and roll instrumentation. Both have polarizing and charismatic front men. Both bands make a kind of angular guitar rock that owes to music of eras from the past. Both albums are relatively short, 35 and 29 minutes, respectively. I’m not saying they are the exact same product here…..simply that the comparison makes sense. It’s somewhat “apples to apples”

Again, one of these is considered a timeless classic and the other a sort of novelty thing. But once you’re done wearing out today’s amazing set of new releases how ’bout ya’ go back and listen to both. I honestly think you might be surprised which one sounds better. But I’d rather not completely tip my hat as to which way I fall on this discussion. But we really want your opinion down in the comments. If you are partial to The Hives hit us with “That Motherfucker Stings Like An Entire Hive of WASPS!!!” Or if you prefer The Strokes chime in with “Imma Jerk Off”

    The correct answer is Pulp.
(What do you mean that doesn’t work in this conversation?)

    • AJ Howard

Breaking: The correct answer is still Pulp.

  • LeMonjello

I’d rather compare Tyrannosaurus Hives with Room on Fire

    • Blochead4real

How about we keep the theme going and compare their most recent full lengths? Lex Hives vs Comedown Machine? The Hives are cleaning up in this conversation. 😉

      • LeMonjello

I dunno if you want to go down that road.

  • LeMonjello

And for what it’s worth: The Hives are more energetic, fun, ‘vicious’. The Strokes have better albums.

    • meat

this is the only answer. jesus, i feel like i’m taking crazy pills.

      • Blochead4real

Only Blocland is willing to broach the question all of indie rock has quietly discussed in lowered voices and behind closed doors for over 15 years. Feels good to get this out in the open.

    • Cooolin

On most days, I’d rather listen to The Strokes. But sometimes The Hives just hit the spot.

    • Saul Wright

I agree except the only Strokes album I like is their debut.

Let’s wait and see how it all fleshes out. One thing is for sure they are very comparable.

  • lobster man

I saw both The Hives and The Strokes on Mad TV back in the day. I remember nothing about that show except that The Strokes and The Hives played on it. So The Strokes & The Hives >>> Mad TV.

I think The Cure played it once too.

  • cheap_suit_jr_jr

    VVV all day

    • Blochead4real

I’ve been waiting a full week to finally call this final. Your vote is the singular one that sways the tally. All the data is in.

The Hives are better than The Strokes. The people have spoken
