Goth songstress Chelsea Wolfe released her world devouring album, Abyss, two years ago and she is now set to follow it up with Hiss Spun. If there’s any trend to pick up on with Chelsea Wolfe releases it’s she gets heavier with each new batch of songs.  With its huge guitars and pounding industrial motifs, Abyss was pretty damn close to being a full on doom album. I’m happy to report she shows no signs of softening up. Her new single, “16 Psyche”, is a noise riddled, grime stomp built around an oscillating doom riff and Wolfe’s eerily emotive vocals. Listen below.

Hiss Spun is out 9/22. Pre-order it from Sargent House.

I must admit to being deeply skeptical of Ms Wolfe at first, put it down to the usual metal head reservations when a ‘non-metal’ artists co-opt chops from our often maligned but much beloved genre. However she completely and unreservedly won me over on Abyss and she clearly knows her stuff. I would love her to go full on Burning Witch in the guitar department. Afraid I’m not pre-ordering anything from Sargent House though, last time I did they packaged my Boris LPs so badly the sleeve was nearly the same shape as the record.

      This is great BTW.

I latched onto Wolfe after Pain Is Beautiful which is a lot more post punk/ dark wave sounding so I really liked the more metal turn on Abyss. She’s definitely more of a resident than a tourist in that world. I’d really like to see her hook up with Sun O))) and do a Black One kind of thing, but with her more “poppy” song writing intact.

I have a Burning Witch tee that I love wearing to shows bc it always works as a conversation starter. It’s either “who the fuck is that?” or “holy shit Burning Witch!”.

Burning Witch fucking RULED, is the point here.

Color me green. I’ve been after a BW tee for an age now. I know it’s kinda sad but I’ve even considered screen printing my own one, not for profit mind, just for me.

  • Blochead4real

Yup. yup. yup. This song is more of the same, but thicker. This artist is fucking dope.

I’m sure this album will be great, but I’m going to miss Mike Sullivan from Russian Circles handling a lot of the guitar duties as he did on Abyss.

    • lobster man

Yeah he was instrumental (pun intended) in her stylistic shift, but I really like the guitar on this one.

Yeah I do too. Troy is a beast.

Such a beautiful marriage. I “discovered” CW when she opened for RC. What a sick double bill that was. Can’t wait to get around to this. Sounds like it’s right up my alley.
