The Phoenix Arizona boundary erasers Spirit Adrift are coming back this October with their second album, Curse of Conception. Today we’re getting our first taste with the albums’ title track. Trying to describe Spirit Adrift in terms of sub genre seems like a pointless and daunting endeavor. Spirit Adrift is, well, a lot of things. All of which are on full display here. The song opens with adjacent guitar harmonies winding around each other’s paths while accompanied by bass and drum work that recalls trad metal’s sense of high drama. Once you think you know where the track is headed, the band plunges down into doom with St. Vitus’ sense of melody and Candlemass’ vocals. From there, Spirit Adrift lift off into prog metal explorations with a touch of arena rock for scaling purposes. Currently, I’m on my fourth listen and I’m very much here for this. Listen below.

Curse of Conception is out 6/10 on 20 Buck Spin.

In 1988 my best friend at secondary (high) school gave me a C120 mix tape. He was trying to educate me. Side B was pure thrash and proto death metal. By the end of the year I’d be blasting that stuff through my shitty walkman headphones day and night, however at this point having only been exposed to the likes of Motley Crue and WASP, Side B was total alien noise. Side A though was a revelation, 60 minutes of NWOBHM and Euro Metal – Maiden, Helloween, Judas Priest, Demon, King Diamond, Angel Witch and Candlemass. It was my gateway to a world I barely knew existed. This track makes me nostalgic for that time.
